Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water 110°F/45°C
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
  • ½ cup warm milk 110°F/45°C
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and 1 tablespoon of the granulated sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy and bubbly. This means the yeast is active and ready to use.
  • Mix the wet ingredients: Add the melted butter, remaining sugar, warm milk, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until well combined.
  • Add the flour: Gradually add 4 cups of flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a sticky dough forms.
  • Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead by hand for 8-10 minutes, gradually adding the remaining ½ cup of flour as needed until the dough is smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky.
  • First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Shape the dough: Punch down the risen dough to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a loaf. Place the shaped loaf into a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  • Second rise: Cover the loaf pan with a towel and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until the dough has risen slightly above the edge of the pan.
  • Bake the bread: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaf in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Cool and serve: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing. Enjoy your homemade white bread!

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush the top of the loaf with melted butter right after baking.
  • Make sure the water is not too hot when activating the yeast to avoid killing it.
